Brandon
Meaning of Brandon
Brandon began as a surname taken from several places in England called Brandon. The place name combines the Old English words brom, meaning broom (a yellow-flowered shrub), and dun, meaning hill, so the name means hill covered with broom. It is pronounced BRAN-dun.
Well-known bearers include Brandon Sanderson, author of the Mistborn and Stormlight Archive fantasy series, and Brandon Flowers, lead singer of the rock band The Killers. On television, Brandon Walsh was a lead character in the 1990s teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210.
Brandon climbed rapidly in the U.S. during the 1970s and later reached its highest rank, No. 6, in 1992, 1993 and 1994. In 1992, 29,628 babies received the name, the most in any year. Its use has fallen steadily since the mid-1990s, and in 2025 it ranked 261st, with 1,326 babies.
