Dominic comes from the Late Latin Dominicus, meaning "of the Lord" or "belonging to the Lord," from dominus, "lord." The name came into wide use through Saint Dominic, the Spanish priest who founded the Order of Preachers — the Dominicans — in the thirteenth century, and it spread across Europe as the order grew. It is pronounced DAH-mi-nik in both American and British English.
The best-known namesakes include the British actor Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry in The Lord of the Rings films and Charlie Pace in Lost, and the Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion and a former world number three.
