Jasper
Meaning of Jasper
Jasper is the English form of Caspar, the name traditionally given to one of the three Wise Men, or Magi, who visited the infant Jesus. Caspar's origin is uncertain, though it is often traced to a Persian word meaning 'treasurer'. Jasper is also the word for a semiprecious stone. The name is pronounced JAS-pur (/ˈdʒæspər/) in American English and JAS-puh (/ˈdʒæspə/) in British English.
A famous bearer is the American artist Jasper Johns, known for his paintings of flags and targets. In Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, Jasper Hale is one of the Cullen vampires.
In the United States, Jasper fell to a low of 812th in 1970 but climbed sharply from the late 2000s. It peaked at 122nd in 2023, when a record 2,944 boys received the name, and in 2025 it ranked 129th, with 2,804 babies.
