Meaning of Jonah
Jonah comes from the Hebrew name Yonah, meaning "dove," and is pronounced JOH-nuh. In the Bible, Jonah is the prophet who runs from God's call to preach in Nineveh and is swallowed by a great fish, often pictured as a whale. His story, told in the Book of Jonah, is read in synagogues on Yom Kippur, and he is also honored as a prophet in Islam.
Well-known namesakes include actor Jonah Hill, a two-time Academy Award nominee, and Jonah Hauer-King, the English actor who played Prince Eric in Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid.
