Meaning of Kai
Kai has several independent origins rather than one agreed source. In Hawaiian, kai means sea or ocean. In Japanese, the name can be written with characters meaning ocean or shell, among other readings. In Finnish and other Nordic languages it is generally treated as a form of the Latin Caius, though some sources connect it with Frisian or German short forms. Its meaning therefore depends on the tradition: sea, ocean, or an inherited given name rather than a single translated word.
Pronunciation varies by language. In Japanese it is kah-ee, in two syllables; in Finnish it is kah-ee. Hawaiian and German speakers say kye, rhyming with eye, and English speakers commonly use kye.
The best-known bearer is probably Kai Havertz, the German footballer who plays for Arsenal and Germany. In literature, Kai is the boy in Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, and Kai Bird is a Pulitzer-winning biographer and co-author of American Prometheus.
Kai has become much more common in the United States. In 2025 it was given to 3,768 boys and ranked No. 93, down from its peak of No. 59 in 2022 but far above its No. 248 rank in 2004.
