The word came into English in the Middle Ages through Old French from Medieval Latin legenda, 'things to be read', a term used especially for lives of the saints. Its root is Latin legere, 'to read'.
The name is pronounced LEJ-end (/ˈlɛdʒ.ənd/). The best-known person to carry it is the singer-songwriter John Legend, born John Stephens, who adopted it as his stage surname.
