Morgan comes from the Old Welsh name Morcant. Its meaning is uncertain: the first part is often linked to the Welsh word for sea, and the second is variously explained as "circle" or "bright." Traditionally a boys' name in Wales, where it is also a common surname, Morgan is now given to both boys and girls. It is pronounced MOR-guhn.
Famous bearers include Morgan le Fay, an enchantress in the legends of King Arthur, and the Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman.
