Skylar
Meaning of Skylar
Skylar is a phonetic spelling of Schuyler, a Dutch surname. Its meaning is uncertain: it is often explained as 'scholar', though some link it to a Dutch word meaning 'to shelter'. The spelling echoes the English word sky, but the name is not derived from it. It is pronounced SKY-lur and is used for both girls and boys.
Well-known namesakes include WNBA star Skylar Diggins and singer-songwriter Skylar Grey. Minnie Driver plays Skylar in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting.
In the U.S., Skylar rose quickly in the 1990s and again in the early 2010s. It peaked at 42nd in 2015, when 5,295 girls received the name, and held that rank in 2016. Since then it has fallen every year, to 167th in 2025 with 1,818 babies.
