Tucker
Meaning of Tucker
Tucker began as an English occupational surname for a fuller, a worker who cleaned and thickened woven cloth by beating or treading it. The surname, chiefly from southwest England, derives from a Middle English verb meaning to full cloth. In American English it is pronounced TUH-kur.
A well-known bearer is the American political commentator Tucker Carlson. In children's literature, Tucker Mouse is one of the animal friends in The Cricket in Times Square (1960) by George Selden. In Australian English, tucker is also an informal word for food.
Tucker was long a rare first name in the U.S. and still ranked only 878th in 1980. It climbed to a peak of 173rd in 2016, slipped in the following years, then rose again to 181st in 2025, with 2,008 boys given the name.
